Everything you need to know about a tractor driver’s license
Any person wishing to drive a vehicle must obtain a certificate confirming their driving skills and availability. Such documents are not universal and are issued individually for each type of vehicle. However, driving agricultural machinery requires more than just training in a driving school: you need a tractor driver’s license (tractor license), which can only be obtained after training and passing an exam at Gostekhnadzor.

Categories of driver’s licenses for tractors and special equipment
All options for a license to drive something are divided into several types, depending on the type of vehicle. Therefore, before learning to drive a tractor, you need to understand the categories of tractor rights.
Category A
Category A tractor licenses include self-propelled machinery that is not intended for motorway use and can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h.
There are several subcategories.
- Category A1. motorcycle off-road vehicles;
- Category A2. off-road vehicles weighing 3. 5 tonnes or less and with a total number of seats of 9 or less, including the driver’s seat;
- Category A3. off-road vehicles weighing more than 3. 5 tons;
- Category A4. off-road vehicles with more than 9 seats, i. e. intended for the transport of passengers.
If a vehicle has more than 9 seats, including the driver’s seat, it cannot be classified as an A3 tractor unit.
Categories b c d e f
Other types of rights have no subcategories and depend on the type of tractor (tracked or wheeled) and the power of its engine.
- B – assigned to Caterpillar tractors with a power of less than 25. 7 kW;
- C — wheel power from 25. 7 to 110. 3 kW;
- D – wheeled with a power of 110. 3 kW;
- E – Tracked vehicles with engine power greater than 25. 7 kW;
- F – combines and other self-propelled agricultural machines.
New sample certificate
Since 2011, only a new type of tractor driver’s license has been valid in Russia. The main difference from the previous one is the presence of a barcode. This allows traffic police officers to quickly obtain all the necessary information about the owner of the document. The new tractor driver’s license looks like this (for an example of the form, see the figure below)
All personal data is entered into a single database. If the license was obtained illegally (for example, purchased without passing the exam for a tractor driver’s license), their barcodes will be considered invalid.
How to check for authenticity
To verify the authenticity of the received certificate, you must send a request to the regional department of Gostekhnadzor. There is no official service providing such checks.
Differences between a tractor driver’s license and a car license
The main difference is that the right to drive a tractor is issued by the State Technical Supervision Authority, and permits to drive a vehicle are issued by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate. Training courses for tractor drivers differ from similar programs in driving schools in that they differ from similar programs in driving schools.
The right to drive special equipment is issued only at places of official registration. This means that there will be very few problems in other areas. If documentation is lost or compromised, the theory portion of the test is passed.
A tractor license is considered valid for 10 years.
How to get a license for a tractor
The only basis for permission to operate agricultural machinery is the possession of a valid license to operate a tractor, which can be obtained by persons who have reached a certain age.
- Category A1 can be assigned to candidates aged 16 years;
- Categories B, C, E and F – from 17 years old;
- Category D – from 18 years of age;
- Category A2 and A3 – from 19 years old;
- Category A4 – from 22 years old.
Learning how to drive a vehicle of your choice in a driving school with obtaining a state license can be achieved. The availability of such a license must be clarified before the start of the training course.
After completing the necessary training, the candidate must pass two exams to obtain a driver’s license – at the educational institution and at the regional Gostekhnadzor.
Self-training of candidates is also allowed. In this case, you must pass one exam. Driving schools do not participate in the educational process. If anyone tries buy a tractor license , then we must not forget that this does not comply with the legislation of our country.
What documents are needed
At the driving school where the exam was passed, or after obtaining all the necessary skills (in the case of self-study), a package of documents must be submitted to the regional Gostekhnadzor.
List of documents on the basis of which a decision is made on a candidate’s admission to the final exam:
- Passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
- Medical certificate;
- Documents received as a result of training at a driving school (not required in case of self-training);
- A completed card containing personal data and information about the categories of rights for which the candidate is applying (the form to be filled out is issued before passing the exam for obtaining a tractor driver’s license).
What medical certificate is needed?
A medical certificate is an important document, without which the candidate will not be allowed accreditation, not to mention driving a vehicle.
To receive it, the candidate must undergo a medical examination by the following specialists.
- ophthalmologist;
- psychiatrist;
- expert in narcology;
- surgeon;
- neurologist;
- ENT;
- Therapist (gives a final conclusion based on the findings of all other doctors).
Theoretical exam
The purpose of the first part of the certification is to determine the level of knowledge of traffic rules and the degree of knowledge of the theory of safe operation of vehicles.
The exam is taken using a ticket with questions or a test on a PC.
If the candidate already has a valid driver’s license (for example, the right to drive a vehicle), then the traffic knowledge test is automatically canceled.
If the score is unsatisfactory in any of these areas, the candidate may be asked to retake the test. Re-accreditation can be carried out within seven calendar days from the date of unsuccessful accreditation.
Practical exam
At this stage of the test, candidates must demonstrate their driving skills in practice. This unit is divided into two parts, similar to a car driving test.
- Testing at a special testing ground (tractor track);
- A special route similar to the operating conditions of the vehicle.
The exam must be carried out in a car of the category that the candidate is applying for the right to drive.
If a candidate takes the test after self-studying, they have two more opportunities to retake the test. If the results of all attempts are unsatisfactory, the candidate will be allowed to retake the exam only after completing the appropriate training at a driving school and presenting a certificate of completion.

After receiving specialization as a tractor driver, not only the category is determined, but also the category of driver of special equipment is established in category A. The first category is intended for drivers with special equipment.
The first category includes drivers of vehicles whose speed does not exceed 50 km/h.
The second category is reserved for SUV drivers. At the same time, vehicles cannot exceed 3. 5 tons. Passenger transport must be mastered separately.
The third category serves as an analogue of the previous type of rights group.
The fourth category was created for drivers of SUVs with more than eight passenger seats.
Training
Since the beginning of 2015, the right to learn to drive a tractor independently has been abolished at the state level. Now, before obtaining this right, you must complete a specialized Gostenadzor course. Special programs were created in educational institutions on the basis of orders from authorized government bodies. You can study and receive your license based on registration at an educational institution. An instructor is provided for the driving test.
Where to train to become a tractor driver
Currently, in almost all settlements of our country there are educational institutions where tractor drivers can be trained.
The cost of training is paid by the applicant independently. Each school sets the price for a driver’s license. For example, in Moscow the price of the theoretical part of training is on average about 11, 000 rubles, and the practical part is about 1, 500 rubles.
It should be noted that usually all educational institutions use the same program.
The exchange of rights also occurs in an educational institution. This is due to the fact that government obligations are charged in the amount of 400 rubles.
Duration of training
There are two options for training tractor drivers:
- Courses;
- Vocational education.
Vocational school and secondary education require more time. In this case, the duration of training depends on the number of classes in a secondary school: 9 classes – 3 years; 11 classes – 10 months; 11 classes – 10 months.
All skills of the profession can be learned in a shorter time, usually by completing a training course lasting 2-4 months.
How much does it cost to obtain and replace a license?
To understand how much the right to a tractor will cost, you need to understand each section of costs in detail.
If you start issuing a certificate, you should plan for the following costs:
- The cost of training in a driving school costs an average of 10, 000 rubles and depends on the price list of the selected driving school. If self-study is planned, the cost of this article cannot be taken into account;
- Preparation of a medical certificate costs an average of 2, 000 rubles. These costs can be avoided if you go through a doctor at a public clinic, rather than a specialized medical institution that offers this service for a fee;
- State obligation to issue a certificate (temporary). The amount of the fee depends on the material chosen for the production of the document.
- 500 rubles – on paper;
- 2000 rubles – on a plastic base.
The cost of replacing a current license does not differ from the cost of obtaining a new license, with the exception of the cost of training in a driving school. The scale of government obligations also remains unchanged.
Therefore, it is impossible to both restore the certificate and get a new one for free.
Do you need a license for a mini tractor?
It is a mistake to believe that special documentation is not required to operate a mini-tractor.
To understand what rights are required for a mini tractor, you need to understand in what areas of activity it is used and where, accordingly, it is moved.
First of all, since this type of transport is used for agricultural work and does not drive on roads, it would seem that the driver does not need to pass an exam on the rules of the road. However, in many cases, mini tractors are used by construction companies and public utilities. In this case, the driver’s ignorance of the rules of the road is unacceptable.
The right to own a mini-tractor is just a certificate for a tractor driver. Only drivers who have undergone special training and passed an exam at Gostekhnadzor have the right to drive such vehicles.
Failure to comply with these requirements means that unscrupulous drivers face fines.
Where and how to change the driver’s tractor driver’s license
The tractor driver’s license must be replaced if:
- The document is damaged, lost or stolen;
- The right has expired;
- Driver payments need to be adjusted;
- Changes in the driver’s health (must be confirmed by a medical certificate).
In both cases, you must contact the regional department of Gostekhnadzor to prepare an application for replacement of documents.
If all necessary conditions are met, replacing an identifier is a simple process.
- No more than six months have passed since the expiration of the last document;
- The driver has documents confirming that he has passed tests of the required category.
If these conditions are met, replacing the license will take less time and will not cause additional problems.
If any of them are not met, Gostekhnadzor may require the collection of a complete package of documents (as in the case of the first admission) and repeated theoretical and practical testing.
Rights to a tractor in Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Belarus
In Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Belarus, the procedure for obtaining a driver’s license is similar to the Russian one.
- Education;
- Medical examination;
- Theoretical exam;
- Practical test;
- After successful completion of the previous steps, a certificate is issued.
Drivers wishing to work on the territory of the Russian Federation should take into account that licenses obtained abroad are not valid in Russia.
To work in the Russian Federation, drivers must receive government benefits in accordance with the criteria established by law.
At what age can you get a tractor driver’s license?
Each subcategory has its own specific age, upon reaching which a person can obtain the right to drive a tractor.
- In the fourth category, category A, licenses can be issued from the age of 22;
- Rank 2 and 3 from 19 years old;
- Category D licenses can be issued upon reaching the age of majority;
- License categories B, C, E and F can be opened at the age of 17 years;
- Even minors under the age of 16 can have an A1 license.
Is a driver’s license revoked if a tractor driver’s license is revoked?
If the license for certain types of transport is revoked for violating traffic rules, the license for other vehicles is automatically revoked.
If a driver commits an administrative offense, he is deprived of the opportunity to drive all vehicles, in accordance with Article 12. 1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. It does not matter who received a driver’s license from the traffic police or any other authorized organization.
Therefore, if a driver is deprived of any license, he cannot drive any type of vehicle.
- The engine capacity is more than 50 cubic meters;
- Maximum speed over 50 km/h;
- Tractors, trolleybuses, trams and other types of vehicles.
