Types of rubber expansion joints

Anti-vibration compensators are used to eliminate pipeline noise and vibration that may occur as a result of equipment operation. They are an elastic element made of synthetic rubber, which has high performance characteristics. Rubber expansion joints resistant to high pressure and temperature, they can even be mounted on pipelines through which food products are transported.

Classification of expansion joints

There are two types of rubber expansion joints:

  • The flanged type is attached to the pipes using flanges, while the latter rotate freely, and the bolts are tightened crosswise using a torque tool. If the compensator is located too far from the fixed supports of the pipeline, then it is recommended to use an option with limiting rods that will not allow simultaneous tension and shear work. Flanged rubber expansion joints cannot be repaired; they can only be replaced. Every month it is recommended to carry out a scheduled inspection, during which you check for leaks, tighten the bolts and wash with a mildly alkaline soap solution and water if necessary.
  • Coupling is most often used in pumping and thermal air conditioning systems. Suitable for acidic environments. The body of coupling expansion joints is made of rubber and nylon textile, and the connecting thread is made of galvanized cast iron.

Regardless of the type of compensator, it should be installed and maintained strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
