Throughout human history, massage has been an integral part of healing. It was often used to treat rheumatic pain and relieve fatigue. In some countries, massage was combined with steam baths. In Eastern countries and India, it was believed that only a priest could perform such a procedure. Additionally, there were special institutions where the art of massage was taught. Ancient Rus combined massage with hardening. The ancient Slavs called massage “khvoshchevanie.”

The significance of massage was scientifically substantiated only at the end of the nineteenth century, accompanied by clinical studies. Experimental work described massage techniques, guidelines for practice, recommendations, and contraindications.

Today, experts assert that massage, albeit indirectly, influences many processes in the body, namely:

— blood circulation;

— metabolism;

— thermoregulatory processes;

— enzyme production.

In addition, during a massage, all dead skin cells are mechanically removed from the skin, which means they are replaced more quickly by new, healthy cells—a highly beneficial process. It has also been proven that massage has a positive effect on the skin cells in the epidermis, which in turn enhances the skin’s protective functions.

Massagealso affects the deeper layers of the skin, specifically the collagen fibers, which become more abundant, making the skin more elastic. It is also a well-known fact that massage has a beneficial effect on subcutaneous fat tissue. This property aids in weight loss, naturally, if massage is performed regularly. Massage treatments also have a beneficial effect on the outflow of venous blood and lymph. This significantly reduces congestion and swelling. Massage increases arterial blood flow, which means it positively affects blood supply to the tissues in the area where the procedure is performed.

But we mustn’t forget that even the best things have their downsides. Massage is no exception. Adverse reactions can occur if the intensity or duration of the treatment is chosen incorrectly. You should always monitor the pace of the massage to avoid negative or even adverse reactions from the body. For example, a fast pace increases muscle tone, while a slow massage performed with great force and lasting a long time reduces muscle tone.
